First, let us talk about what is Trap shooting. Trap shooting is one of the three major forms of clay pigeon shootingthe art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay targets, with a shotgun or any type of firearm. The other two forms are: 1. Skeet shooting where skeet throwing machines are used to throw clay disks from a variety of angles and contestants attempt to break these flying targets, and 2. Sporting clays, where sporting clay throwers present contestants with clay targets usually in the shape of an inverted saucer, made from a mixture of pitch and pulverized limestone rock designed to withstand being thrown from traps at very high speeds, but at the same time being easily broken when hit by just a very few lead or steel pellets shot from a shotgun.

Different specialized equipment are used for trap shooting, however, some common characteristics can be said of traps. They are purpose-made, spring-loaded, flywheel or rotational devices especially designed to launch the different types of targets in singles or pairs at distances of up to 100 meters. Trap machines can be said to vary from the most simple such as hand-cocked, hand-loaded and hand-released types to those more advance and complicated ones like fully automatic variety, which can hold up to 600 targets in their own magazine and are electrically or pneumatically operated. Target release is by remote control, either by pressing a button or by an acoustic system activated by the shooter's voice. Some popular makers and brands of trap machines are: the Winchester trap throwers, Western trap machines or the Western trap throwers.

If you are wondering why this hobby or sporting game came about, just think of it as being a replacement for a game where live pigeon targets were once used. That is why trap shooting has one of its names also being known as clay pigeons. Trap shooting has been a sport since at least 1793 when it used real birds, usually the Passenger Pigeon, which was extremely abundant at the time. Fake birds were introduced around the time of the American Civil War as the Passenger Pigeon was nearing extinction and sufficient numbers were not reliably available. Clay targets were introduced in the 1880s, and gained wide acceptance, but trap shooting of live birds is still practiced in some parts of the United States.

Trap shooting can definitely be a very engaging and challenging hobby to get into, especially if you are one who enjoys skills development and target shooting.
