Treating Eczema In Babies -winning The Battle With Eczema In Children

It is hard to find information that talks about the treatment of eczema in children and eczema in babies

. After all, there are lots of other things to do and think about after getting your newborn baby home from the hospital. The treatment of eczema in babies is surely the farthest thing from your mind. However eczema in children is a fairly common skin disorder and can be relatively easy to treat.

As Im sure you already know eczema appears as dry, scaly, irritated skin that is often itchy. Although this skin condition itself is not contagious it is subject to infection if further irritated. It is possible for babies to develop eczema in many different places including knees, face, neck and even their belly. Eczema in babies is often characterized by crusty weeping skin. Luckily the treatment is relatively simple and easy to implement.

Eczema removes moisture from the surface of the skin so keeping the skin adequately moistened is of great importance. Because excessive bathing can have a drying effect on the babys skin it is recommended that children with eczema only bath 2 to 3 times a week using a mild soap such as Dove. Parents of children with eczema should avoid the use of perfumes and dyes in household products that will have contact with the childs skin. After bathing the baby should be patted dry never rubbed and then moisturized immediately. Most unscented and thick lotions should be sufficient. Many doctors recommend reapplication of lotion several times a day.

If the skin stays red and irritated taking a topical steroid like a 1% hydrocortisone cream can be used and will help ease the skins irritation. Many physicians and parents alike recommend the use of mittens on the hands of babies with eczema to prevent them from scratching infected areas and causing infection.
