Trench mouth is a condition which is not seen very often in the developed world

, although it is still often seen in third world countries. The condition draws its name from the First World War, when trench warfare was the primary method of combat. Soldiers in the trenches often suffered from extreme cases of gum disease, and the worst forms of the condition became known as trench mouth. The scientific term which is usually used to describe trench mouth is necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. This term indicates that the condition is a form of gingivitis. However, it is a form of the disease which is much more severe than the average case of the disease which most dentists would encounter.

Trench mouth is a very painful condition. The gums of a patient suffering from trench mouth are likely going to be swollen and red, and are going to be extremely sensitive. Bleeding is very common, especially when the gums are contacted such as when they are brushed or when certain foods are eaten.

Trench mouth can also include open sores in between the teeth and on the gums. Patients will often suffer from extremely bad breath as a result of the infection within their mouth. The infection can also lead to a fever as the body tries to fight off the fever.

The symptoms of trench mouth can certainly also be symptoms of milder diseases which are more treatable. What is important is for patients to realize that when they start to experience gum pain or any irregular symptoms of the gums that they see their dentist. In most cases the disease will be mild and can be treated easily. In the cases where a condition actually is trench mouth, it is important that dental care be sought as soon as possible.

Trench mouth is caused primarily by people not looking after their mouths properly. Oral care not only keeps teeth healthy, but also keeps gums strong and vital. When this is neglected, gums become weak and prone to infections which can lead to trench mouth. Certain habits can also increase the likelihood of developing this type of disease, such as smoking. Smoking is one of the highest risk behaviors with links to the majority of oral health care problems.
