Trigger Point Acupuncture For Athletes

One of the most intriguing moments of 1993 was the scandal that erupted at the Chinese

National Games where nine Chinese women broke world distancing running records. This resulted in an uproar from the competing athletes who accused them of using steroids and banned performance enhancing drugs. A thorough investigation revealed that the women were indeed taking performance enhancing drugs, just not the banned ones! They were using Chinese herbal remedies, given to each athlete based on an extensive diagnosis of their individual strengths and weaknesses. This was the first time the sports world saw the true potential of using traditional Chinese medicine. Since then, these herbal remedies along with other ancient Chinese practices have cemented their place in sports medicine. Acupuncture, one such practice, is used actively today by athletes to treat sport related injuries and for improving performance on the field. It focuses on the importance of a properly functioning muscular system and the effects of misbehaving muscle groups on seemingly unrelated pain and other health issues. While traditional acupuncture involves inserting numerous tiny needles into particular points and then letting them sit for a specified period of time, trigger point acupuncture takes on a slightly different and more aggressive approach. Acupuncture doctors who are experts at trigger point Acupuncture use their knowledge of probing muscular causes of the problem and hands-on touch to locate the unnatural tightness. Once such muscles or muscle groups have been identified, an ultra-thin, single-use acupuncture needle is inserted into the suspect muscle(s) by the acupuncturist. This needle gently probes as it looks to produce localized involuntary twitching. It targets the direct manipulation of muscular tightness known as trigger points in order to generate repeated involuntary twitching from the target muscle. This reaction in turn fatigues the tight muscle and produces an immediate reduction, if not complete elimination, of the tightness. It is common to experience short term muscular soreness caused by involuntary twitching after this treatment. However, this soreness is similar to post workout soreness or DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and is completely harmless. There are multiple reasons why these trigger points would originate in an athlete. They could be a result of new or old injuries. They could be caused by improper training, overtraining, incorrect posture or body mechanics. Even stress has been known to create trigger points. Trigger point acupuncture restores the natural balance of those muscles. The probability of success with trigger point acupuncture is usually apparent within one to three treatments. Some people may have reservations about the use of needles. However, the needles used in this acupuncture procedure are much smaller than the typical syringe. Furthermore, these needles are produced under FDA regulations. They are sterile and single use only. While there are non needle treatments available, these are generally not as effective as trigger point acupuncture. This treatment is offered at numerous acupuncture clinics across the United States and is arguably one of the safest ways to counter physical problems and injuries.
