Trigger Point Therapy – Benefits of Trigger Point Therapy
Whenever you meet with an injury or any sort of accident
, it started aching or paining from that place. What do you think then? Most of us believe that the problem lies inside the part which is paining. But it is not necessarily be like this always. This pain can be due to the trigger points in the muscle fibers that lie away from the part which is paining.
Trigger points are the certain areas of tenderness in muscles that can be developed due to birth, injury, poor posture, overexertion etc. Muscles fibers are made of very small units called sarcomeres. These sarcomeres are flexible and contract and expand during any muscle movement. Even a slightest movement in body requires working of millions of sarcomeres. Sometimes these sarcomeres remain in contracted position and can't expand back which develops trigger points in those areas. Due to this hold contraction, blood flow stops in that particular area. This causes oxygen deficiency and accumulation of waste products. This irritates trigger points and they then send the pain signals to brain thus causing us feel pain in that area. This pain is termed as referred pain.
There are basically two types. They are:
Active trigger points: These are the cause of muscular pain in the body and they refer pain to another area when pressure is applied to them. These points also cause muscular weakness, numbness in muscles and tingling.
Latent trigger points: These points causes pain only when they are pressed and pain is not transferred to other areas. These points are the main cause of stiffness in body and limited motion of muscles in old age.
Trigger points are different from acupressure points as they can be felt physically in the body. Trigger points are responsible for headache, jaw pain, pain in joints like knee, elbow, wrist, shoulders which are often considered to be due to arthritis, ligament injury, tendinitis etc. This misunderstanding causes complexity in treatment as initially it is not identified.
This is the treatment developed to reduce pain due to trigger points. This helps in reducing stiffness and swelling in muscular fibers. It increases motion; reduce tension, increase circulation and flexibility of muscles thus resuming them to pain free movements. This trigger point therapy was developed by Dr. Janet Travel in the United States. This therapy is also termed as myofascial trigger point therapy.
Trigger point therapy mainly releases your trigger points. In this therapist first of all make the concerned part inactive by injecting local anesthetic like corticosteroids. This lessens pain and then treatment starts which involve applying pressure to that area. This causes release of soft tissue and movement is regained. Blood flow starts and muscle spasm is reduced. Along with this, there is neurological release that prevents pain signals reaching to brain. During one visit several parts can be treated simultaneously. Sometimes massage therapy is also included along with this therapy.
This therapy is very helpful in treating muscle groups in arms, legs and neck. It helps in reducing stress and fatigue and giving relaxation. It removes accumulated metabolic wastes from the body which enhances smooth blood flow.
You can also perform self treatment by applying pressure but have to be cautious. So undergoing with this therapy can solve your problem of continuous and acute pain which may be occurring to you for a long time.
