Troubleshooting Car Starting Problems
If you put your keys into your car ignition switch
, turn them and left an eye brow from surprise as you hear the strange silence of your engine, it might be the beginning of a very bad day. The problem of starting your car can make you very frustrated because troubleshooting it is one of the hardest tasks you can ever attempt. This is true because if you try to count the possible sources of the problem, you will find that they are countless. Pretty much everything under the hood of your car can be the cause of your unfortunate, frustrating day of troubleshooting.
To make this task a little easier, you need to follow a strategy. You need to start from the beginning and test each component along the way until the end of the line. Some of those diagnostics are easy and strait forward while some are highly technical and extremely disappointing. Either way, you are stuck here and we need to find out what is preventing your engine from making that sound that you love. Try the following steps in sequence and let's see what we can do.
If your car is one of those cars that have a fuse associated with the starting system, try checking this out. Try installing a new fuse and see if this will help your car start. In many cases, people crawl into the hood of their cars and start fooling around with everything while the problem is just as simple as a faulty fuse. Do not make the same mistake!
More often than never, there will be no faulty parts in your car, and replacing everything under the hood will not help even a little. Before you come to this point, check your battery posts. Dirty battery connections are a nightmare. They break the connection of your car to the rest of the system. Although everything is brand new, power is not reaching anything and nothing will start. Clean the battery posts and try again before you reach the point of despair.
Corrosion on your battery connection can even reach more than just cutting the power to the rest of the components. It can damage those other components in your car. The components that are directly connected are the ones most vulnerable to this problem. The starter is your next guess. If you have a circuit tester, hold its lead to the smaller of the two wires that connects to your car's starter. This is the wire responsible for delivering current to it. Then, have a friend of yours turn the key in the ignition switch and check the current level in your tester. If the current meter comes to live and your starter is still not spinning, then your starter is faulty and needs replacement. Make sure that before you tell your friend to start the car, you stay away from any moving parts under your car's hood because it can still run in any moment.
The last problem we are going to check on is the ignition switch itself. We do this on two steps. First, turn your key into the on position and see if you get any lights on your dashboard. If there are no lights, the ignition switch is bad. If lights start jumping, then we jump to the next step. The next step is to start your headlights, then turn the keys all the way on. If your ignition switch is bad, nothing happens. Otherwise, the headlights will dim and the dash lights will disappear.
