The first factor is having a strong desire to stop smoking. You have to honestly know that you are ready to quit. It's important to have reached the point where you want to quit at least as much as you want to smoke. If you can't make the commitment, it will be harder to succeed.

It might be easier to get to the point where you have this strong desire by thinking about things like your health, your family or your financial situation.

There is no disputing the fact that smoking negatively affects health. In fact the harmful effects of smoking on the body have been well documented. Smoking has been linked to many types of cancer, as well as heart disease.


Not only does smoking affect your health, it also potentially affects the health of your children through second hand smoke. And there is proof that the adult children of smokers become smokers far more frequently than children raised in a non smoking home.

As if that's not enough, buying cigarettes or other tobacco products costs a lot of money. Think of what you could do with all the money you are spending on smokes in a month.

The second key factor is being confident that you can kick the habit. If you've ever quit smoking only to start up again, you may be feeling some doubt instead of feeling confident. This doubt increases with each "failed" attempt.

It may not be easy to get rid of these negative, self defeating thoughts but it is possible. The way to do it is to change the way you think about your quitting attempts.

Rather than beating yourself up for failing, give yourself some credit. After all, when you were trying to quit you did smoke less, didn't you? That's a success, not a failure. And because you were able to do it before, there's no reason why you can't do it now.

When you are learning to drive, it takes practice and you may even have to complete a driver's training program in some areas, before you are going to be able to get your driver's license. You have to learn the rules of the road as well as the actual act of operating a motor vehicle. That takes time. Smoking cessation is kind of like that. It will take some time, maybe even a lot of time.


The third factor which is vital to success is to decide on a stop smoking method. There are lots of stop smoking methods, from cold turkey, to nicotine replacement, to hypnosis, to herbal remedies to mention a few.

So what is the best method to stop smoking? Drum roll please! The best method is whatever works for you in the end. You may have to try a few methods before you find the one that works for you. It's different for everyone.

The whole point is that if you have a strong desire to quit, and you feel confident that you can succeed, then all you need to do is find the right quit smoking method. Trying to quit smoking may not be easy, but it's worth doing for so many reasons.
