Twitter Gaffes - How To Lose 1000 Followers In 7 Days Or Less
Twitter has been criticized and mocked for being too conversational and casual
. If you are a Twitter user, then you will have no doubt seen the odd tweet about what cereal Johnny ate this morning or what music Johnny is listening to right now. The creator of Twitter, in his infinite wisdom and mercy, limited each tweet (as posts on Twitter are called) to 140 characters.
So how can a platform where people go to tweet about their unremarkable lives also be useful for marketing purposes? The answer is not to approach Twitter as a marketer. Twitter is a social networking site and there are guidelines that your tweets need to follow in order for people to want to read your tweets and to keep following you. Your followers can unfollow you if at anytime they feel that you are not worth following which is why it is important to provide some sort of value with every tweet.
Here are a few ways to lose a lot of followers in a short period of time and/or how to garner little to no attention for each of your tweets:
1.By constantly tweeting your affiliate links.
People don't join Twitter to be marketed to. People join marketing lists because there was something on the front end which enticed them to trade their name and email in return for information, or they purchased a product and ended up on a list. Even in marketing lists, where marketing emails are acceptable, it would not be appropriate to constantly blast out affiliate promotions. This is probably the easiest way to get people to unfollow you.
2.By making your tweets about you and not your followers.
It is common to use a service called Tweet Later to automate one's tweets. For example, you can create a message that is automatically sent out to people immediately after they follow you. While it is convenient, it is not advisable to do so because people always prefer it if they get a personalized greeting rather than an automated one. Another mistake is to be selfish. Remember, well-known experts and celebrities have a massive number of followers on Twitter because their followers find value in their tweets, whether it be marketing advice, tips in their respective niches, or the feeling that they're somehow involved in celebrity's life. Since you're probably not a recognized expert in your field or a celebrity, then you must find other ways to make yourself worthy of being followed. Tweeting about the weather or what you had for lunch may be interesting to you, but it won't appeal to anybody else, so don't do it.
3.By being anti-social.
What this means is that you shouldn't just tweet into the Twittersphere. You should tweet to other people as well; Twitter is a social networking site after all. This ties into the previous point that you need to make it about your followers and not about you. You should not only provide value for your followers, but also engage them in conversation.
Twitter is one big social scene where you can meet people you would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. By following the rules and guidelines of Twitter, you'll be building strong relationships, and that's the secret of achieving success with Twitter.
