Two Decades In The Toy And Gaming Industry
Twenty years ago children were happy with a new football
, action figures or if they were extremely lucky a state of the art 8bit Nintendo entertainment system with a Super Mario Brothers cartridge, one of the first gaming consoles which really kicked off the video game console market. At that time an 8bit console was seen as state of the art and if kids couldn't get their hands on one they usually settled for one of the latest action figures a football or another relatively low tech inexpensive toy.
In last twenty years the toy and gaming industries have seen large advancements in technology leading to an ever increasing market of hi-tech toys and gadgets aimed at the young and impressionable. This technological advancement is usually also accompanied by an ever increasing price tag. Video games are a prime example, the original 8bit console has evolved into a high tech computer system, the Playstation 3 features a 3.2 GHz processor and up to 320 GB of internal hard disk space. Computer games were once a hobby for young adults but as gaming becomes an increasing part of children's social activities, the demand for more expensive and higher tech consoles is increasing.
This increase in technology and gadgetry has not been solely focused on the video games industry. An area experiencing extensive advancements in technology is the actual toy industry, an industry that has always performed well and will continue to do so as long as children demand toys to play with. Twenty years ago one of the most popular toys of the generation were the teenage mutant ninja turtles, parents raced around the shops trying to secure toy turtle action figures in time for their children at Christmas, with the most advanced toy in the range featuring a lever that would move the figures arms up and down when pressed.
Today is a very different story, the demand for bigger and better toys to satisfy an increasingly tech savvy and entertainment hungry young generation has led to more complicated and more technologically advanced toys. Match box have recently released a toy garbage truck that is receiving a lot of attention, Stinky the garbage truck is an electronic toy refuge truck that interacts with and responds to light, sound and touch with any number of over 100 pre-programmed catchphrases and responses. If Stinky is poked in his stomach area he will respond with laughter and a witty remark, feed him toy cars and he will replicate eating motions, break wind and demand more. Another popular toy is the new ultimate Buzz Lightyear action figure, however Buzz is no ordinary action figure from the 1980's, Ultimate Buzz Lightyear also features over one hundred different phrases, flashing laser lights and mechanical space wings.
To suggest that toys that didn't feature high tech gadgetry were dead would be wrong, more simplistic and no-tech action figures still perform well in the toy industry. The Zingzillas are a band of musical apes from a new BBC children's television programme and one of the best selling toys from the range is the Zingzillas toy doll that features no flashing lights, no pre-recorded catchphrases and requires no batteries. However to accompany the range of basic Zingzilla dolls are battery powered musical dancing figures, so although the original minimal figures are still selling strong it seems the market advancements make it a necessity to go bigger and better.
The gaming and toy industry have come an extremely long way in a mere twenty years and the rate they are still expanding who knows what kind of entertainment marvels we could see before another twenty are up.
