Types of Business Management Jobs for Recent Graduates

Will that business or marketing degree pay off? If you're a college student facing the difficult economy and feel finding a meaningful employment seems like a goal out of reach, waiting to find a job right after graduation may already be too late. With many of your peers entering the workforce, you may already be a few steps behind. Even if you are apprehensive about finding work with your business degree, what options are out there?

Before you start a search, talk with your school's career counselor. He or she has several resources about finding employment and preparation. If the types of positions available seem nebulous (and this may be common for liberal arts majors), a career counselor can point you to some resources to better define your goals.

For students with business degrees, however, getting caught in the salesman trap can happen, and in order to prevent starting your career on the wrong path, a career counselor can give you some tips regarding looking for business management jobs at your level. From what to wear to how to network to finding the right job for your personality (this is often determined by a Myers-Briggs test), resources from a career center (at a school or even one in your community) can improve your job search and give you a clearer strategy.

As far as what you can do with your business degree, what options are there instead of sales?

For entry-level business management jobs, positions like junior project manager or junior account manager allow you to start your career track in a successful field. Junior-level positions are often a hybrid of assistant skills, such as aiding a team, but also allow you to observe senior members and pick up new skills along the way. Additionally, as a junior-level employee, standing out in your role by showing leadership abilities and initiative from the beginning will likely get you noticed and may increase your chances for promotion.

Entry-level business management jobs do not always need to be in marketing, project management, or account management. Other paths for graduates with business degrees include human resources and retail management. For the latter, some stores offer management trainee programs for graduates, which can be used as an internship or as an entry-level position. Often in the role of assistant store manager, a management trainee learns skills from the store manager and is involved in training and hiring entry-level employees, and managing another store is the goal of such a program.
