Types of Mattresses
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses are certainly the most popular type of mattresses and have numerous options, features, and styles
available. While prices begin at approximately $300 for the basic models, you can expect to pay at least $800 for a quality
queen size mattress. Innerspring mattresses that have a pillow top are considered more comfortable. In comparison to other
kinds of mattresses, innerspring mattresses come in a wider range of firmness and seem to maintain less body heat, but they
also transfer more motion, which might be a concern if you share your bed with a partner. In addition, they're more prone to
sagging and less than air and foam mattresses and should be replaced every 8 to 10 years.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Memory foam mattresses consist of a layer of 1" to 6" of viscoelastic foam that is glued to a thick polyurethane base. Memory
foam mattresses have received favorable reviews from their owners. The owners of memory foam mattresses are more likely to
report satisfaction with this type of mattress than are the owners of innerspring mattresses, but approximately 20% of owners
say that memory foam is too hard to move on, too hot, or too firm.
Latex Foam Mattresses
As compared to memory foam mattresses, latex foam mattresses are springier and don't retain as much body heat and are
therefore more comfortable in the summertime. Much the same as memory foam mattresses, latex foam mattresses are more durable
than innerspring mattresses and also repel dust mites. In addition, they are the most environmentally friendly type of
mattress since most latex is biodegradable and is a renewable resource. But, latex mattresses aren't appropriate for people
who are allergic to latex. In addition, they require a slatted foundation in order to prevent mold growth underneath the
mattress.
Air Mattresses
As opposed to using foam or springs, air mattresses use air cushions that are adjustable in order to provide support that is
tailored to your body. There are some air mattresses that permit each side to be adjusted independently in order to provide
different levels of firmness. Some owners who say that it is difficult to sit on the edge of the mattress and that it is
uncomfortable. Still others have reported that there is a noticeable gap in between the air chambers that can interfere with
sleep. However, dual chambered air beds are one of the few options that are available for sleeping partners that prefer
mattresses that have different firmnesses.
