US Census Releases the Figures: Texas Gains in Population
US Census figures released today December 21, 2010 show Texas as one of the leading states in population growth. The Texas population grew from 2000 at a rate of 18.8% which is over twice the national average. These figures show a national trend to move to southern states away from North and Northeast.
One of the reasons for this shift is the cost of living in Texas. The cost of living in Texas is significant less than in the Northeast. Boston ranks 129 in Kiplinger's cost of living index while Dallas ranks 92 with 100 being the national average. The average cost of a house in Texas is $150,000 which is a bargain over other states. If reversion to the mean is a natural law then real estate prices should rise in Texas. This would be a great time to buy a home.
Another reason Texas is outgrowing other states in the warmer weather. This has been the trend for the last 10 years for people to move towards less freezing and cold climate. Other states like Florida and Georgia are benefiting from this trend.
Finally, Texas has been less restrictive for business growth. Less regulation and lower taxes attract businesses and new ventures. This creates jobs and opportunities that help maintain the population and attract newcomers. The run-up in oil prices has also help maintain the traditional oil business jobs as well as creating new ones in the new field of green energy.
