USCIS Celebrates Citizenship Day by Welcoming More than 9000 New Citizens

The Constitution day and Citizenship day is observed on September 17 by U.S

. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) every year. This year, USCIS commemorated the day by hosting 63 special ceremonies to naturalize more than 9,000 candidates. In collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS), these 63 special ceremonies were hosted by USCIS from Sept. 13, 2010 till Sept. 24, 2010. USCIS hosted the naturalization ceremonies in 22 national parks throughout the country, which were based on the theme, "Embrace Citizenship-Experience America Through Your National Parks."

USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the Constitution and Citizenship Day is celebrated every year by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in order to mark the signing of the U.S. Constitution. He also stated that, despite the difference in their individual backgrounds, U.S. citizens are unified by their respect for the Constitution.

On Sept. 15, 2010, 25 citizens were naturalized by USCIS at the foot of the General Grant's Tree, in commemoration of the Constitution and Citizenship Day. Following this naturalization ceremony, 60 citizens were granted USA citizenship at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, St. Louis, Mo on Sept. 17, 2010. In addition to these ceremonies, USCIS also hosted a cornerstone ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 22, 2010.

Apart from these naturalization ceremonies, various other national parks ceremonies were also hosted by U.S. Citizenship and immigration Services throughout the country. The locations where these national parks ceremonies were hosted, include the historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in Lowa, the Angel Island State Park in the middle of San Francisco Bay, Grand Canyon, the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Mo., Homestead National Monument, Homestead National Monument, and Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas.
