Understanding Analog Camcorder Formats From Vhs To The Hi8 Camcorder

There are a great many consumers of today that do not take the time to think back

to an era when digital technology was not yet introduced to the camcorder market. It wasn't until the late part of the nineties that such technology became very commonly seen within the market. Because this is so true, we will be reviewing the video formats of the past, from VHS to the hi8 camcorder. This will be a great way to buff up on your sense of market history.

So what exactly is analog technology and how does it compare to the digital technology that is so common place on today's marketplace? Well both types of video cameras use censoring devices and they both use light that is recorded as a video signal onto a tape. The important difference with the digital models, is that they actually record digital information to the tape, whereas the analog camcorders record an electrical wave signal.

Who could forget the most commonly seen camcorder that introduced the consumer to the world of video cameras? One of the oldest formats around was the responsible for launching the camcorder market, VHS. It is very important to note that the technology remained very popular for screening home videos for years, but the large and often cumbersome nature of the camcorders, practically drove them out of the market when smaller formats became available.

The consumer marketplace was practically demanding cameras that were much smaller in size and that also weighed a lot less. This is why most popular companies stuck with one of several portable video formats. There was format developed by the people at Sony that revolved around cassettes that were filled with 8mm tape and it was called 8mm video. Another format took traditional VHS tape and placed it into much smaller cassettes that could only fit half an hour of video and this was called VHS compact or VHS-C.

This next part is where analog video formats tend to get a little tricky in nature, this is because most popular formats had a hi-band equivalent. The post production processes of analog technology caused generational loss because the editor was essentially making a copy of a copy. This higher band formats held up well through editing because they offered an original image with much more resolution.

People who preferred larger production cameras would often utilize a format that was called super VHS or SVHS. This is because the cameras offered much better resolution recorded on to special VHS tapes. The image resolution and quality of the stereo audio was typically much better as well. The size of the cassettes as well as cameras shrunk with the addition of the SVHS camera format. These models were not nearly as popular as the competition hi8 camcorders however.

The hi-band version of 8mm, effectively coined: "Hi8", was the most popular of these hi resolution formats. This is because the greatest features were often found within this hi8 camcorders. It was often very hard to find prices that more effective, especially when one considered the price at which SVHS-C gear was retailing for at the time.

After learning more about the history of analog consumer video formats, a person might be able to better chart newer trends in the industry by remembering the older ones that were previously set by VHS and hi8 camcorders. It is important to consider the past when predicting the future, any history teacher will vouch for that fact.
