Cases of children admission in emergency ward due to accidental intake of medicine are not uncommon

. Every year thousands of similar cases are reported worldwide and the cause is the Childrens inquisitive behavior often leads to some serious consequences, which is practically impossible to stop. However, the number of such cases can be controlled by curbing the access of medicines to children. This is exactly the reason why the concept of child-resistant pharmaceutical packaging came in existence.

Child-resistant packaging also called C-R packaging is a special type of packaging used to prevent the risk of kids ingesting dangerous items. Usually, to accomplish the purpose safety caps are used but there are many other techniques used for packaging medicines that not bottled like blister packs. The technique used to cap the product is designed so make it complicated for children to open. Any technique before using them practically is passed through several tests. Only those techniques are commercially used which are approved and passed by government.

In many countries, rules and regulations are tough for the safety of children.

Mostly over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, household chemicals and pesticides are regulated. In fact, some jurisdiction has regulated even unit packaging like blister packs. In coming years, child-resistant locks are expected to be used for wide varieties of packs by developing different techniques.


Though the child-resistant locking closure for containers was invented in 60s, but was seen more frequently from last decade. Today, many drug companies manufacturing strong products are using this type of packaging for sensitive products.

While this technique has reduced the possibility of child ingesting pharma products, it has developed a problem for elderly and physically challenged users. Since such packs are complicatedly designed, they are sometimes tough to open for old and physically challenged people. This can be called a drawback of the technique, but this is acceptable when its purpose is working to avoid accidents and save lives.

Most parents face the situation when their children swallow medicines unknowingly land in ER (emergency room) of hospitals. Child-resistant pharma packaging has managed to reduce such threats. Decreased number of cases in recent times is the evidence of their effectiveness and success. Today, many countries are working to strengthen the law related with pharmaceuticals and their primary target is to implement child safety measures. With the implementation of regulations, the cases of such incidents can be reduced to another level in future.
