Understanding Eating Addiction

Other than clearing up major issues of unfinishedbusiness, our psychotherapeutic approach is not to goback to day one to find out the root causes of behavior. There's not time for that in twenty-eight days. We focus onthe feelings of here and now. Instead of concentrating onthe behavior that the disease has caused, we work oncreating new behavior, new identities, and new attitudes.

Too often people in therapy keep waiting for some thing to happen. I say you have to make it happen and get in touch with the energy that taking action releases. Thenyou can take that energy and go outside of yourself andfeel a part of the universe, combining energies with others to create a sense of belonging. Knowing you're a part ofsomething good and useful and making a contribution toit is what leads to recovery.

There's more resistance in the mind to getting well than there is in the body. Addicts have worked too hardfor too many years reprogramming their minds to give itall up without a struggle, but if they don't think too much about what they need to do, they'll get there. The sicknessthat rages in food addicts' bodies is the direct result ofwhat's going on in their heads, which are full of negativethoughts about themselves and others. Those thoughtsare the bars that make up your prison. They need to bereplaced with positive thoughts and action so the real youcan be freed to have a life. Fortunately, the laws of physicsare on our side: Everything in nature moves from a negative to a positive, but never the other way around. How many negative people attract you? Or do you gravitatetoward those who feel good about themselves andothers?

Changing negative thoughts to positive ones is calledcognitive restructuring. For the mind to register a negative thought, it has to think it in a positive first. When ithears "Don't eat," the mind registers two sentences: first,"Eat," and then, "Don't eat." I believe it's better to say"Stay sober and go to meetings" than the traditional"Don't drink and go to meetings," because the mindregisters "Drink" before "Don't drink." Most peopledon't even realize they have a choice about how they thinkand that knowledge is tremendously liberating. You canchoose your thoughts but not your feelings. Feelings are reactions to thoughts.
