Understanding Eating Disorder

An eating disorder can be described as a nature to either hog oneself or completely avoid eating which can lead to both physical and mental health problems. This is because many kids and teens are very conscious about their looks and body. This pressure becomes an obsession in their minds''leading to disorders. It is commonly seen among women especially those in the fashion world.

The disorders can be-

Anorexia nervosa- the person thinks that he is fat and so avoids eating. Thus becoming very thin in the bargain

Bulimia nervosa- it is overeating followed by induced vomiting or use of laxatives

Binge eating- uncontrolled eating

Causes

The causes of such disorders are still unclear and could be a mix of psychologicalgenetic and social factors. Those suffering from anorexia or bulimia have a constant killing thought that they are fat. Some sports like balletgymnastics have this lean factor requirement. This criterion adds mental pressure and the affected become prey to such disorders in order to meet the requirement. Certain psychological disturbances like anxietydepression or drug and alcohol addicts are also at a risk for such behavior.

Media could also be a cause for such fatalistic desires in people as it makes a huge impact on the viewers. Models or hostesses are lean and advertisements are always shown and displayed with thin women. This has a major detrimental effect on their confidence and self esteem. Media or too much T.V. viewing also restricts boys from exercising and they slowly develop a tendency to overeat.

It is also said that some people are genetically prone to such behavioral problems. It has been found to affect people if their biological parents or siblings are suffering from such eating disorders. It is said that a naturally found chemical serotonin in the brain may also play a role as it has a connection with food intake.

Risk Factors

Age- it can occur at any age- from teens to older adults

Gender- found more commonly among teenage girls and women

Emotional factors- more common among people with depressionanxietyobsessive compulsive disorders

Family- constant criticism from family and siblings

Diet- wrong ideas about dieting and starving to lose weight

Work- certain sportsactivities demand a thin frame body as in gymnastsballerinasrunners etc. Also seen in television personalities models etc.

Media and society- focus on body shapes and sizes on television and magazines. Also giving an image that a thin body is the secret behind beauty and success.

Eating disorders should be treated at an early stage to avoid any further complications. It is good to seek professional help which will help boost your self esteem and morale and help you look at life and health from a totally different angle.
