Understanding Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS)
. It affects the nervous system by damaging the tissues of the nervous system. The disease is a chronic disease and results in inflammation of the body and nervous disorders. It often results in disabling the body parts during the later stages. In MS the immune system of the body automatically starts attacking the constituent of the neural cells. It is an autoimmune disease where the body's defenses starts attacking the Myelin, which comprises a layer to surround and protect nerve fibers of the CNS. When these nerve fibers get damaged, the nerve impulses to and from the brain and the spinal cord are delayed and distorted. This results in complete malfunctioning of the voluntary muscles of the body. The damaged myelin also results in deformation of the tissues (or sclerosis) which causes inflammation of the body.
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis depend on the severity of the disease and include weakness of the limbs, numbness and clumsiness of the hands. The weakness and imbalance are the primary symptoms of MS. This can affect the persons posture while standing and walking. It also affects the control over the internal body organs causing urinary and bowel incontinence, and erectile dysfunction in men. During the later stages it becomes more severe and develops into paralysis. The severity and growth of this disease cannot be explained and vary from person to person. The cause behind MS is unknown and still being researched.
The Multiple Sclerosis is as such an incurable disease and no known medication or therapy is known to cure MS completely. There are some therapies which can be provided to lower the symptoms of MS. These therapies are also based on the MS symptoms and the body organs being affected from MS. Some orthopedic therapies are provided to patients for regaining control over the body organs. The medicines are also prescribed to suppress the inflammation and painful condition of body organs.
The MS not only results in symptoms which are painful but also most of the times embarrassing for the patients. The symptoms like lacking balance over your limbs and incontinence can result in situations which discourages the patient to involve in social activity. This also results in emotional disorders with the patient. Thus it certainly becomes necessary to manage these symptoms. The urinary incontinence of the patients can be managed effectively with the use of incontinence products. This allows to the patient to make mind free of the possibilities and enjoy the life freely. The MS patients also need to discuss their problem with the concerned people and make them understand the situation instead of hiding away from it.
