Understanding Self Hypnosis
In a nutshell, self hypnosis or "autohypnosis" is very similar to meditation. Guiding the body and mind into a state of peace and relaxation, it makes use of self suggestions and positive affirmations, thereby re-programming the brain. With a healthy dose of open-mindedness, it can be an excellent tool in managing stress and alleviating depression, negativity and outmoded patterns of thought."Training" the brain to view things in a different way is a skill that, with just a little bit of practice, can change one's life for the better and contrary to popular belief, does not require a qualified practitioner. YOU can be your very own hypnotist! This is how you do it:Self - hypnosis for dummies:Step 1: Find a quiet area where you can be away from all disturbances for 30 - 60 minutes.Step 2: Close your eyes, relax your mind and allow all random thoughts to flow freely. Resist the urge to fight them off; simply watch them as one would watch a movie. Sooner or later, the thoughts will ebb off and the mind will be still and empty. This may take considerable practice.Step 3: Give attention to each part of your body; slowly moving upwards from your toes. Visualize each body part becoming lighter. When you are sufficiently relaxed, you are ready to move on to the next step.Step 4: Take deep breaths and with each inhalation, picture yourself as the positive beautiful being you were meant to be. With each exhalation, visualize all the negative thoughts, patterns and behaviours leaving your body. Release and bid farewell to all your obstacles and limiting beliefs.Step 5: Visualise a place where you feel or have felt most at peace. This could be a rose garden, a lake or a beautiful park. See yourself at the entrance to this exquisite place and feel the excitement with each step closer that you take. Eventually, you will reach the gates. Visualise yourself entering and walking around in wonder.Step 6: You should, by now, feel a slight floating sensation. This is the moment to start feeding yourself positive affirmations and instructions. Examples: "I will stop smoking tomorrow" or "I am a successful, confident woman". Repeat for as long as you intuitively feel necessary.Step 7: When you are ready, leave your peaceful fantasy area, repeat the affirmations and slowly count to ten. See yourself leaving this place and going back to where you first started.Step 8: Calm your breathing and slowly open your eyes. You can enjoy as many sessions as you like and remember, practice makes perfect. Some people may find it very challenging to make their imaginations the tool that will set them free, so to speak. To this point, there are several self-help guided meditations and hypnosis CD's and MP3 programs that could be of benefit. As Napolean Hill once said: "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve". Good luck on your journey and may every dream become a reality.
