Uninterrupted It Service A Necessity In Business

Today's businesses are run by or do much of their business with internet technology and computers

. When a company's computer network is up and running, it contributes greatly to the amount and quality of the work done by the company's employees. When a computer or other part of a network malfunctions or crashes, the operating costs and the time necessary to bring it back online, are expensive. Repair costs can be dramatically cut using an out of band management system with the business' IT network.

Out of band management, also known as lights-out management (or LOM), is capable of remotely accessing, managing and continually monitoring a network's assets. This allows an administrator to connect to the management controller of the individual computer in the network, even if it is turned off or is unresponsive. The asset can then be restored to use and any problems with its operation identified and resolved. This saves the expensive of keeping IT technicians on staff.

Out of band management is important for several reasons. The same problems that beset network computers and cause them to malfunction can affect in-band management's channels to the Ethernet. The in-band management (IBM) system supports a wide range of network operations but cannot function itself if the networks operating system is down. The same causes that crash a network also cause IBM access to the computers to be lost. LOM uses a dedicated channel for network maintenance that is completely separate from all others. This channel is isolated physically from the data channel and remains uncorrupted. LOM can continue to manage the computers remotely without anyone having to physically access the computer itself. LOM also continuously monitors all programmed system variables such as device temperature while allowing access for remote operations such as troubleshooting and rebooting of machines.

IT managers must have network access when a problem arises with servers, routers and computers in the network. LOM allows for monitoring and programming by remote control regardless of where the machine is located. Out of band management enables the IT coordinator to power one or more computers on and off, restart a non-functional computer, boot up a computer from a local connection, and imagine a computer by using a boot image file to reboot it. Managers run commands, repair utilities, upgrade firmware and run disc repair utilities. They configure scheduled software updates and schedule deployments for waking up computers before running the updates.

Remote access cards are another form of LOM. These cards have their own memory, processor, network connection and access to system bus as well as their own battery power source. These are effective but expensive. The most common LOM use connects each of a network system's computer serial consoles with the LOM console sever. The LOM then can monitor the network's self-testing and other data and grants console access not available through the in-band management.

Out of band management consoles provide for a high level of performance from IT infrastructure and meet the demand for service availability to be uninterrupted. They are cost effective and secure.
