Union Square: San Francisco Hotels, Shops And More

It's time to reinvigorate that old feeling, my old thoughts

, my travels, and my old content. Imagine a barren wasteland filled with strip malls and dour folks. If you live in the North East, this won't be hard to do -- you live in the land that fashion, and good taste forgot. If you're one of the chosen few who were shrewd enough to get an IT degree, then you need never live in strip mall hell. Instead, you can live in San Francisco.

If you're planning to motor west, either permanently or temporarily, and old San Francisco is on the radar, be sure you make a beeline for Union Square. This is where you can get your proverbial shopping on -- among other things, like your groove. But stay frosty: not all Union Square San Francisco hotels are created equal. Some, of course, will cost you more than others. Other will be worth the money, but not much else.

So, why bother with Union Square, you may ask? Let me put it to you like this: what's all the fuss about Times Square? Now, you're getting the picture. Founded as a pro-Union rallying point (and hence the name), the Square has mirrored the evolution and de-evolution of Times Square -- from staging grounds to red-light district to uber-fashionable shopping district. Now, you have to pay New York prices to enjoy the grandeur of today's Union Square.

In '98, the Square was closed to the public to make way for a gentrification extravaganza. All the surrounding buildings were retrofitted, and renovated to make the Square a palatable hipster gathering place. When it was re-opened to the public in late 2000, it became a gleaming gateway to retail bliss and chic label-lovers. And, yes, to facilitate all the new gathering hipsters, the Apple flagship store opened nearby. Ah, the new bliss of iPhones and over-priced clothes.

Admittedly, there's something about the Square -- I can't lie. You can't help but check your brain and better sense at the periphery and reach for your wallet to shell out for anything and everything. It's the track lighting, wood panel interiors, and gourmet goodies. You can't help but be mesmerized by the svelte selection of Union Square hotels, pubs, restaurants, shops, boutiques, and salons to choose from. It's spending speedway heaven and it's just waiting at the Market Street stop.
