What could be a better gift? A one of a kind hand painted silk scarf by New York City artist Joan Reese. A unique and thoughtful gift and keepsake. Each scarf is signed by the artist.
She starts by first making a water color picture on rice paper using Chinese ink and paint. When she likes a particular design, she then paints it onto the silk using a variety of different techniques. She uses non-toxic French dyes and a wide range of different materials like gutta or wax, salt, alcohol and fabric metallic paints for accents.
Joan Reese relies on spontaneity and uses the ideas that pop in her head to create her designs. This freedom allows her to enjoy the creative flow of ideas that eventually get turned into a work of art. She is influenced by Asian, floral, abstract, and geometric motifs, that can be readily applied to my silk paintings.
Joan learned about painting on fabric at the School of Visual Arts: New York City while studying for her BFA. About ten years ago, she started to paint on silk.
The scarves are hand-hemmed on all sides. Joan Reese can create a personalized silk scarf according to the buyer's specifications. The scarves can be worn as a head-wrap, belt, body wrap or a sash. They look beautiful framed and hung on the wall.
The silk scarves can be washed in cool water and shampoo, and cool-ironed while damp. The colors are permanent and will not run.
Ever since she started wearing them, Joan Reese's scarves became very popular among her friends. People started appreciating her designs, and many of her friends and acquaintances started buying her scarves. When one of Joan's friends started losing hair due to her chemo treatments for cancer, she started wearing Joan's hand painted silk scarves as a head cover. She also started promoting Joan's products to her friends at the cancer center. That is when Joan began her own web retail store to sell her scarves. Thanks to her friend, who by the way is doing well now, Joan was able to transform her passion into a profitable business.
