Unleash Visualization to Get Your Goal Setting on Track
Did you know that the brain has difficulty telling the difference between an imaginary
and a real experience? By visualizing an outcome that we want we trick our brain into experiencing ourselves achieving our goal.
Essentially, visualization is where the entire goal setting process begins. By imagining what we want, we kick start the entire process. But simply day-dreaming about our goal is only scratching the surface of this powerful tool.
Visualizing our goals give us a moment to be in the moment with our goals, to get the sensation of achieving them. This provides motivation in spades, as well as the satisfaction of seeing how happy our goals have the potential to make us.
On a piece of paper write out your goal in great detail. Where you will be, who you will be with, everything and anything you can detail for that moment, write it down. List how it will make you feel. Go over this list a couple times and try and commit it to memory.
Make sure that your visualized goal is a big, fat, positive. Dreaming about avoiding failure, or averting disaster puts you in a mindset where you are playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. Have your goal be one of action, of you making strides to achieve something great and wonderful.
Make sure the visualization is realistic. Having a visualization about finding a magic lamp with a genie in it on the beach will only serve to demoralize you in the long-run. You'll associate your goal with fantasy instead of reality.
Now that you know what you are going to visualize:
Find a quiet place. Doesn't matter where, as long as it's relatively quiet. Dim the lights, and block out all distractions. Turn off your cell phone, the TV, the computer; anything that could distract or interrupt you.
Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing and nothing else. Do this until you feel your heartbeat slowing, and your breathing becoming deep and slow.
Now, think about your goal. Focus intently on the details of it. Go through your list over and over until the thought of your goal feels like a memory that has already been lived.
Consistently visualize the same thing. Try not to change your desired outcome too much. The key to successful visualization is repetition. Do it often, at least a couple times per week, if not every day, and you will inscribe the "memory" of your goal being accomplished in your mind.
