The story underneath this motto is that there was a king in Sevilles history named Alfonso X who was also a poet, astronomer, astrologer, musician and linguist. Later, when his son, Sancho IV of Castile, tries to usurp his throne, the people of Seville were still loyal to their king. That is believed to be the origin of the motto.
