Using A Dog Crate To Housebreak A Puppy

Using dog crates to housebreak and train a puppy is the simplest and easiest way to get good results

. It is a good way to prevent problems and teach a puppy very early what is expected of him or her.

Because dogs are den animals, they need and want a bed and a special place of their own where they can feel secure. Start to use the crate from the first day the puppy is brought home, and it will become accustomed to it in a very short time.

Dog crates are made of wire, wood or plastic, in a cube or rectangular shape, with a top and a door. The purpose is to provide the dog with safety and a secure feeling, while protecting household goods from chewing, soiling or destruction.

Make sure children do not open the crate or try to play inside the pen. Explain it is only for the dog. Give the puppy chew toys and a nice blanket or dog bed to sleep on. The dog crate should be large enough for the dog to lie down, stretch out and stand without hitting his head on the top. No larger than that.

To housebreak the puppy, take him outdoors on a leash and stand at the place you want him to go. Do not let the dog wander. Say potty or poopy or business or any word you want to use. Be consistent and say the same word each time. Do not walk the dog until he does what you want. After he relieves himself, praise the dog, give him a treat and take him for at least a fifteen minute walk.

Next, take him in the house and let him play outside the crate for about an hour. Take him back outdoors to the same spot, repeat it all over again, reward him, walk him and bring him in. The puppy should be taken outside before going in the crate and immediately after being released from the crate. This needs to be done several times a day. Have patience--this is a puppy, or at least an untrained dog and the object is to teach him. Never hit or punish the dog or worse yet, rub his little nose in an accident.

Dogs do not want to soil their den, but if it happens in the crate, clean it up immediately. Do not make the dog stay in a soiled area. Remember dogs want to please their owner. If the puppy came from a pet shop, he may have gotten used to going in dog crates, so watch him and take him out at once if he starts to relieve himself in the crate. Patience, kindness and rewards will pay off in a short time and you will have a well-trained pet.
