. Accordingly, they can measure current, electrical resistance and voltage respectively.

This article deals exclusively with the function of digital multimeters as ohmmeters. They can be used to gauge the electrical resistance in a circuit. Accordingly, a zero (0) reading would mean absence of resistance in the circuit, while for open circuit it will show infinite.

Incidentally, the digital multimeter that is used as an ohmmeter to conduct a resistance test uses its own battery. And so there should be no power in the circuit tested for the prevention of any damage. So, next time you go for electrical resistance testing just make sure to isolate the wire from the circuit so that your ohmmeter does not get damaged.

Unlike analog ohmmeters that need to be calibrated before being used, digital multimeters do not need to be calibrated. This is because they get calibrated automatically. In fact, you can confirm this by holding the two leads together.

For conducting a test all you have to do is connect to the two leads to the two sides respectively of the required wire harness. For example if you wish to check a wire harness then connect one lead to one side and other lead to the other side. For a wire in working condition, you would get a reading and on the contrary for the one that is dysfunctional you would get an infinite reading.

However, even for using digital multimeters as ohmmeters there are different varieties and you should choose the one that fulfills your requirements. While some have traits like taking average readings, there are others that have minimum and maximum reading features. Again there are some that come with specific diode test features. Whatever you buy the choice is yours!
