Using Military Education Benefits To Receive A Degree At Military Friendly Colleges

Over the past few years, greater attention has been paid to our service members and their post-service reintegration into civilian life

. The Montgomery GI Bill has been a long used benefit that provided thousands of veterans the opportunity to obtain higher education. Since 9/11 the Post 9/11 education benefit was introduced that added even more opportunities for veteran education. Of the many programs available, Risk Management is becoming an area of interest for many veterans. The current availability of military friendly colleges, combined with military education benefits, makes the possibility of obtaining a risk management degree within easy reach of a veteran.

Risk Management is an extremely diverse field with unlimited application. The primary function of risk management is to identify threats or vulnerabilities and determine methods in which to reduce those vulnerabilities. Because risk management involves threat analysis and "target hardening," veterans often find the concepts similar to their jobs in the military. A risk management degree offers veterans an excellent selection of career choices from which to select.

Military education benefits are not related to only post service plans. Programs similar to the Army's EARMYU provide soldiers the ability to obtain degrees prior to separation. The Naval Education and Training Command is similarly designed to assist in the education goals of sailors. Each branch of the military offers education opportunities from both branch related training and university based education.

Upon completing military service the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 bill are available for use. Although offering similar benefits, the newer Post 9/11 is usable for 15 years after a service member is discharged from the military, as opposed to the 10 years for the Montgomery. Both plans are available for traditional and correspondence educational institutions and can also be applied towards professional certifications and on the job training.

The needs of active duty service men and women, as well as veterans, vary greatly. Deployment or work schedules often make traditional education virtually impossible. With the ability to access the internet, military members and veterans have a much easier chance to find a military friendly school that enables them to be flexible in the course structure, which promotes a productive and effective educational experience. These military friendly schools will understand the nuances of the military education benefits and assist the veteran or military student in getting the benefits approved.

What constitutes "military friendly" often relates to an institution's understanding of the needs of the student as opposed to upholding the traditional rigid structure of traditional universities. This understanding comes from the school's administration having a sympathetic knowledge of the needs of the military person. Some schools who offer a risk management degree have veterans as instructors and are able to be more flexible when conditions exist outside the control of the student and can guide them accordingly.

Military members and veterans alike have an opportunity that has not been available in the past. Due to the availability of military education benefits and the amount of military friendly schools, no serviceman or servicewoman should feel they cannot reach their educational goals. In searching for a career choice, a risk management degree appears to be a choice for which veterans seem to be well-suited and offers a variety of options within the field. No matter which career choice a veteran or military member makes, educational opportunities are readily available to make them successful.
