Using Social Media Sites For Traffic
One of the hottest trends in online marketing right now revolves around the use of
social media sites like Twitter to generate traffic, make sales, and even to build a list. What most marketers forget when they join social media sites, also known as social networking sites, is that these sites are for socializing, not marketing. If you approach social media sites as a marketer, then you will fail to generate any significant amount of traffic. However, if you establish yourself to your contacts as a helpful and authoritative source of information, then you will have the clout in your social networks to drive massive amounts of traffic to wherever you please.
Before you even think about your end goal for using a social media site, you should join one merely as a person looking for interesting content or for conversations with others like yourself. It would be unwise for you to join a social media site and start plugging away at it without first getting a feel for the community and how the members behave. For example, the typical thing for marketers who are new to Twitter to do is to join, mass follow a few hundred or more people, and then repeatedly blast out their affiliate links. While sending out nothing but promotional offers is a tactic which still enjoys some measure of success within the realm of email marketing, this method definitely does not work within the realm of social media and social networking.
People who forget that social media sites are social in nature usually give up on their accounts at those sites and cry about their failures. People who understand and even embrace the social media culture thrive in those environments and are therefore able to amass a large number of followers, readers, viewers, or whatever the case may be. The key to making the most out of a social networking site is to build strong relationships with your fellow members.
There are two general things that you should do in a social media setting. In fact, these two things apply to real life social settings as well. You should provide value and ask questions. Your real life friends are your friends because you have a mutually beneficial relationship where you enrich each other's lives. While it does not usually get as intimate as a real life friendship, connections made on social networking sites are essentially based on the same values. One of the biggest differences between virtual friendships on social networking sites and real life friendships is that friendships online can be terminated guilt-free with a click of the mouse.
Your ability to generate traffic from social media sites depends almost completely on the quality of the relationships you have with your fellow members. Providing quality content and contributing to conversations is important, but these things allow you to build stronger relationships with people. Once your network is in place, you'll find that people will be more willing to listen to whatever you have to say and go wherever you want them to go.
