Using Technology to Manage a Supply Chain

Supply Chain Management is a concept used by many businesses. The main goal of Supply Chain Management is to operate efficiently, at the lowest cost possible, while creating products or services that meet the customer's satisfaction.

The supply chain process could be complicated with numerous detailed steps or it could be as simple as receiving parts from a supplier, making a product from the parts, and selling the product to customers. In order to better manage the supply chain, technology software systems have been designed. These include, but are not limited to, Order Management Systems (OMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), and Labor Management Systems (LMS). These technology software systems are discussed in further detail below.

OMS

This system maintains and processes customer orders to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

TMS

This is used to manage shipments for on-time delivery and customer satisfaction. It improves freight visibility, tracks and determines the best shipment route, and reduces damages in transit costs.

WMS

This system controls the storage and movement of inventory through order management, picking, receiving, shipping, put-away, slotting, and reporting tools.

LMS

This is used to measure worker productivity based on predefined performance indicators, It helps identify bottlenecks, unproductive time, and the need for training. It also will typically have a built in tool to enable reporting out.
