Using mind Power To Quit Smoking
There is a lot of talk about mind power in the healing and medical communities these days.
You've probably heard of things such as hypnosis, affirmations, positive thinking, willpower, the placebo effect, mindfulness and NLP to name just a few.
But what is Mind Power?
Many people confuse brain power with mind power, but really they are two separate things.
The brain itself is a very real and tangible object. You can touch, feel and see it. It works electrically and chemically.
Brain power or control is used in our lives every day to complete such tasks as breathing, eating, sleeping, working, brushing your teeth and so on.
With your brain you are AWARE of things like emotions, memories, perceptions, decisions or anything else you can think about consciously.
It can be quite tricky though, to draw a line between brain and mind, conscious and unconscious and not all of the things mentioned above are done consciously.
You do not have to remember to breathe (unless your favourite movie idol suddenly walks into the room perhaps!). Once you are asleep you are of course, no longer conscious, and you may dream and be conscious of that or at least remember it when you awake.
The mind is also very real, but it is quite intangible. No-one has ever seen it, let alone touched or felt it, but the power of it is felt just the same and we generally use it quite unconsciously.
No - one really knows the exact way it transmits energy, thought or power.
The unconscious mind is generally everything that is outside of our awareness.
This includes any habitual or automatic actions, feelings, beliefs, emotions, memories, thoughts, or fantasies that are taking place in your unconscious mind that you are unaware of yet still affect your everyday life.
It is your past, your present and your future and your imagination.
Einstein said your imagination s the most powerful thing you have.
The mind power that fascinates me is the placebo effect. This basically means that if you believe something will make you better then it likely will.
It is used in studies, particularly drug studies to test the effectiveness of a drug.
Will the people taking the placebo get better or not compared to those taking the actual drug?
Some studies have been done that show the group who got the placebo actually had higher rates of success than the group that got the actual drug.
This leads doctors and scientists to believe that the power of the mind can actually heal a person who is sick and this belief has led some doctors to perform trials where patients receive 'pretend operations'.
Patients were somehow led (ethically I assume) to believe they had a certain operation when in reality they did not, however real physical results were obtained.
Similar studies have been done with pain relief. A recent 60 Minutes program showed some patients receiving more relief with placebo pain relief treatments than the 'real' treatments AND the results showed up on brain scans.
There were actual real time changes in the brain. This is amazing news.
You can use your mind to make yourself better!
This ability to heal lies in your subconscious mind. If you truly believe that you have received a 'real' remedy or that you can get better, than you more than likely will!
Now, there are many people around the world that practice ways to increase their mind power and they use it for many different things. It seems those faith healers were on to something after all!
One thing it is used for is smoking cessation.
Yes, you can quit smoking using mind power or hypnosis.
The smoking habit is in the unconscious mind. You are generally unaware of the effect of this, of the needs smoking fulfils, and that makes it hard for smokers to quit smoking. It is also where the unconscious beliefs about nicotine and smoking are instilled in the smokers' mind, such as "nicotine is really addictive", "I really need smoking to cope" or "it is so hard to quit smoking".
Nicotine in fact is 80% out of the body in 2 days and completely out in ten to fourteen days. After that it is the mental side that remains unless it is deactivated by hypnosis and new beliefs and strategies for fulfilling those natural human needs are instilled and activated.
It is a fun process to sit down with your therapist and design how you will do this, and it is fun for the therapist to see the look of dawning understanding and shock on the face of their client when they realise what has been happening.
Fun Times!
