This modernisation has helped push the city up the list of major English tourist destinations, and in 2009, Leeds ranked eighth in the visitor numbers table of all English cities. International traffic arriving in Leeds comes chiefly through Leeds-Bradford Airport which, as the name suggests, is an equal distance from these two neighbouring cities. Europe, north Africa and Pakistan all have direct flights from the airport, while feeder flights to London Gatwick, Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle airports link the city to all major worldwide cities.

The city lies at the northern extreme of the M1 motorway from London, while the trans-Pennine M62 motorway also passes close to its southern boundary, making getting a parcel to Leeds fast and easy from most parts of the UK.
