Vampires, Do They Really Exist? Or Just Legend and Folklore
Whether you write paranormal romance novels and spend hours in your research or an avid reader of the mystical, we all know that vampires are as old as time.
We find them everywhere, movies, art, books and even in the real world. Their stories and history have always been associated with the folklore and legends of the vampires. Now please keep in mind that by vampires, I am not referring to Dracula or some individual who claims he's a 500 year old. As far as I'm concerned, though feared for centuries, the undead vampire has never existed, left to only live through our writing fantasies no matter the genre.
Throughout the years, we've seen reports of blood motivated killings. Where these murders committed by vampires who really didn't understand their true calling? Or, where they carried out by unstable people who in their minds thought they were vampires, that a voice in their head ordered the murders. Most of the times these killings were motivated by factors other than vampirism. So can vampires or vampire communities really be blamed for those crimes? No, of course not. (Though it does make for good writing material)
In books we describe them as red eyes with pale-ish white skin and foul smelling breath. Or in our romance novels, as the devilishly handsome creature of the night. Both of these features are the most recognized images of a vampire worldwide, but do vampires really exist? Are they more than just what our novels make them out to be?
Nowadays, we often hear people speak of 'real life vampires' and 'modern day vampires'. Many describe these people as 'gothic' or "punkers", but are these individuals real vampires? Many believe they are. And as a paranormal romance author myself, I can't deny that this just fascinates me.
So let's take a look at what a modern day vampire is.
There is what people consider to be the 'gothic'. Most of us know these 'vampires' as actual blood feeders, but realistically, they aren't out on a feeding rampage and more often than not, only require very few ounces of blood to satisfy their special thirst. To many this practice is frowned on and looked upon as the works of evil.
This leads us to the actual drinking of blood, which - and let me add this here - not all 'modern day vampires' do, but I'll get to that in a minute. These vampires - who drink blood - are called blood feeders or Sanguinarians within the vampire world. By drinking blood a vampire capture the life force from within us known as "chi". A vampire does not drink blood to just to prove anything. According to the modern day vampire, blood drinking is very different and sacred. For them blood drinking is an inborn desire, a hunger satisfied only by that same desire.
Then there's what is called the "PSI" or Psychic Vampires. These are the non blood drinkers, but still they need their dose of "chi" which they acquire in various psychic forms. Just think for a moment, have you ever felt like you were drained of all energies after talking or standing in front of a person for quite a while? Well... what a naughty vampire!
So when viewed in this light, vampires do exist. Much to our amazement they are people much like you and I, but with very special needs and equal special abilities. Fangs aren't much of a fashion grabber for today's modern vampire though. Looks aren't everything either, but today you can't really say who's who just by their looks. According to researchers, both of these 'gothic' or 'modern day vampires' grow old slower than the average person, especially if they are well nourished.
In closing, one can conclude that vampires are people who lack the ability to produce that special force of life. That energy and substance that powers life. When interviewed many 'gothics' are adamant about being responsible when practicing their blood drinking. At least most of the time, most blood feeders have their own donors. These donors can be from close friends to their own partners. I guess when you think about it, drinking someone's blood other than your own would make much more sense. When it comes to blood drinking, to a vampire that is a very sensitive matter. The risks of infections are everywhere. Something to be very conscience about.
So do vampires really exist? In today's world, yes indeed, but they are far from what the media or writers have instilled in our minds. Vampires are people who, in most ways, are just like you and I. So, if you ever find yourself suddenly tired or fatigued, look around you, you might have just experienced a psychic bite.
