A Look at Nintendo's 3DS, It's Playability and Drawbacks
Nintendo has been pushing the gaming experience forward for decades, and they have done it again with their latest concept, the 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS, slated for release in the spring of 2011, utilizes the same 2-screen design of previous models, but has added a new feature: a 3D experience without the use of glasses. Possessing a slider, the gamer can choose between 2D and 3D renditions of game titles, giving them complete control over their gaming experience.
This development is very exciting, as the 3D quality of the games themselves is very impressive. Videos are already hitting YouTube exhibiting the technology in action, and showing users how easily they can adjust the 3-dimensional quality of the visualizations.
In previous releases of titles like Dogs + Cats, the gaming experience was subpar, and often quite lacklustre in playability, but in 3D, the animals come alive in an impressive exhibition of the technology. Racing in a 3D world is exciting as well, as Ridge Racer 7 doesn't disappoint.
The 3DS is exciting, but does have some issues that will need to be reworked in later editions. The doubling of images was unexpected, and at times the 3D quality wavers. Using the slider doesn't help like we'd hope, but Nintendo will certainly add to and improve upon this console. This confidence doesn't temper the excitement that Nintendo's 3DS is creating upon its release.
Titles are already creating quite a buzz, and reviews of the best available games are already available. Some of the titles include:
Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Ridge Racer 3D
Pac-Man
Mario Kart
Pro Evolution 3DSoccer
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Paper Mario
Dead or Alive Dimensions
And many more!
Looking at the titles available above, there is no doubt that Sony has gone out of its way to ensure no gamer is left out. There are games to suits all types of games, from the core gamers to the casual and social gamer. You can even gain "walking points" for the distances you move. Some gaming content can be unlocked with these coins, though more details are forthcoming. And finally, when interacting with online friends, you can utilize an onboard messaging system, keeping you in touch with up to 100 friends at one time.
The price point for the 3DS will be around $249.99 in the United States, and should hit the market in late March, 2011. In Europe, retailers will have a bit more control regarding the price, and they will have the unit available a few days before the American release. Prices for Australia and other countries at the time of writing this is yet to be confirmed.
