Known as Benaras or Banaras and Kashi in olden days, is today known as Varanasi, one of the most sacred places for Hindus. It is located in the northern part of India in Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is situated at the bank of Ganges. It is the oldest city than one can think of. The renowned American Novelist Mark Twain once wrote, "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together." Varanasi has till date preserved the rituals and traditions of Hindu philosophy.

The city has got ennumber of Ghats, Temples, Ashrams, Stupas and Sects. Besides Hindu temples there are Jain temples and Buddhists stupas too. Varanasi is the place of unlimited attraction. The archeological museum has The Ashoka Pillar, the National Emblem of India. The city is a place of many temples Durga temple, Sankatmochan temple, New Vishwanath temple, Bharat Mata temple, Mritunjay Mahadev temple are the temples to name a fewEvery day at dawn, thousands of people offer prayer to The Sun God in waist-deep water. Assi, Dasawamedha, Barnasangam, Panchganga, and Manikarnika. The best time to visit these Ghats is at the break of dawn.

Though Varanasi is well known as Hindu pilgrimage centre, one cannot over look its Muslim heritage. The great Mosque of Varanasi, Gyanvyapi Masjid is also the integral part of the city.

The city is famous for its Silk Sarees. Any Indian wedding is incomplete without a Banaras Silk Saree. The city has many good shops not only for Banaras Saree but also for Mirzapur carpets, musical instruments and also for mangoes.

The place also has one of the biggest and the best university in Asia called Banaras Hindu University (BHU). It is a center of Sanskrit, Indian Art, Culture and Music. It was gifted by a King of Varanasi a scholar himself.

The best time t o visit Varanasi is between October to March. Summers are killing hot in Varanasi. The city sees heavy rains in monsoon. From the month of September city weather turns out to be pleasant.
