Varicose veins refer to the condition in which the veins of the legs become varicosed, i.e. they appear swollen and bulging and can be made out from the outside. Symptoms of Varicose Veins

1. Aching or discomfort in the legs

Risk Factors for Varicose Veins

There are several risk factors for varicose veins. Aging can cause wear on the veins over time and cause the valves in the veins to malfunction. Genetics can also be a risk factor. If you have members that have or had varicose veins there is a better chance that you too will end up with varicose veins. An over weight person forces their legs to carry a larger amount of weight, which causes more pressure on their legs and causes varicose veins. Being in the same position for long periods of time can cause varicose veins, since blood does not flow well when the body is in the same position for long periods of time. Lastly women are more at risk for varicose veins than men. Hormone changes in women during pregnancy, menstruation and menopause causes a vein walls to relax. Taking birth control pills or hormone supplements can also cause varicose veins since they cause a change in the normal hormone levels in the body.

Treatment of varicose veins:

1. In milder cases wearing of stockings gives relief from the varicose veins. The stockings compress the veins and prevent stasis of blood in the veins.

2. In severe cases surgery is done to excise the superficial veins to control.

3. In bad cases early treatment should be done to prevent complications.

4. Vitamin C and E should be taken by people suffering with varicose veins to strengthen the veins.

Prevention of formation of varicose veins:

1. Varicose veins can be prevented if some of the following measures are taken.

2. Avoid continuous sitting or standing.

3. Resting of the leg by keeping on a stool while working for long times helps to prevent accumulation of blood in the veins.

4. Avoid crossing of legs.

5. Prevent constipation by taking fibrous food, fruits and green vegetables.

Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

1. Apply cider vinegar to the varicose veins in the morning and evening till the veins starts shrinking. This is a good home remedy for varicose veins.

2. Apply vitamin E oil or witch hazel tea to the affected areas. This is a good home remedy for varicose veins.


3. Natural remedy for varicose veins - Raw vegetable juices especially carrot juice in combination with spinach juice has been proved beneficial. It should be taken in a proportion of 300 ml carrot juice and 200 ml of spinach juice.
