After speaking to one doctor at an area hospital we have found that he would like to give those young people considering the medical profession a warning that they must be prepared to put in a huge amount of effort to do well in medical school and the training that comes after graduation. He indicates that anyone looking to go into medicine needs to be entirely positive of his or her goal.

This is not to say that it is not worth the effort, when you finally succeed you will find it was all completely worth it. The demand for doctors is always high. This doctor also stated that he had never been let down before in his career and never felt the urge to change his profession.

If you want to become a practicing physician it will require you attend a minimum of nine years of schooling. Four of those years will be medical school and at least a year of internship should be added to the tally.

Specialty doctors might have to put in up to 5 years in a residency program, and the time spent in school is time that is not spent earning money. However, the opportunities in the medical field are practically endless for a young person with a good diploma, so they can definitely find something that calls to them.

Opportunities in medicine include careers in research, private medicine, public health, and institutional medicine, to name a few.

A female who is thinking of becoming a physician might learn that she is expected to compete with males, and that can be discouraging. Women may face discouragement due to this, but their opportunities may be found in a multitude of various areas of medicine.

There is one doctor who peddles himself as a family physician, and he claims that he got into his medical profession practically unwillingly in the beginning. When he was in the navy, he was placed in the medical corp for six years. He stated that although he didn't have choice in the matter, he practiced with doctors and nurses for six years and that fact decided his career for him.

Most professionals will tell you the long hours are a big drawback to a career as a surgeon or physician. You should expect to be unable to spend the amount of time you may wish with your family and friends.

He stated that although it is difficult to give a definite figure, he guessed that he puts in about sixty hours a week. This time is split between seeing patients in his office and making the rounds to visit his hospitalized patients.

And even when he is not at the office or the hospital, he is on call, 24 hours a day. A lesser portion of his working hours include providing medical services to a variety of industries doing examinations, preventative and treatment measures.

Most doctors have no contracted or guaranteed salary, but are paid on the basis of the nature of his services and how much he does.

For those who are brave enough to make it through the grueling education and extremely long hours, there will be rewards. The best thing about the job, says the doctor, is when you can find a diagnosis that no one else can and prescribe something to treat it.
