Veterans Coalition Working to Provide Housing for Homeless Veterans
After serving our country, some even putting their lives on the line, dozens of veterans are homeless in the Tri-Cities.
The Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition is working to put a roof over their head, and help to get back on their feet.
65-year-old Denny Enyeart served four tours in Vietnam. He's been homeless since 1997 and has been calling a pick-up with a camper attached home for around a year.
Enyeart says, "It's been a rough road."
Four months ago he applied for a spot to live in a Kennewick house on Grande Ronde Avenue. It's subsidized housing for homeless male veterans scheduled to open up in May.
Enyeart says, "A lot of people don't realize they are that close to being homeless -- that's where I was."
The Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition is the driving force behind this house. It's not just a roof over these men's head but a chance for veteran's to get back on their feet.
Steven Gaulke with the Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition says, "Sort of a holistic view of their needs. Medical, mental, health issues, addiction, unemployment, education -- just sometimes friendship."
It's been a community effort to put the house together.
All the furniture is donated. But there's still work, there's some remodeling that has to be finished and a sprinkler system has to be installed.
Out of dozens of veteran's reported homeless in the Tri-Cities, there is space for six men in the house.
They can stay up to two years, but have to apply and pass a background check.
It's not just older veterans looking to move in. 34-year-old Jeremy Winans returned from Afghanistan in 2008. He was injured jumping off a truck that came under fire. He's been homeless for a year and a half and is looking for some stability.
"Getting my life back together. That secure environment is definitely going to be number one like the jumping off point."
Something he believes he can find in this home in Kennewick.
The house was in foreclosure but the City of Kennewick bought it and then gave it as a gift to the Veterans Coalition. I did talk to a few neighbors who are in support of this home for homeless veterans.
The Veterans Coalition has met with eight applicants so far and five are eligible.
The coalition is working on finalizing funding for the remodeling and putting in the sprinkler system.
