Video Games - An Intelligent Design
I have a brother-in-law who plays video games all the time
. He's one of those people you hear about in the news who literally lives in front of his computer, playing video games with people from all over the world. I'm not sure of all of the video games he plays, but wherever I visit him, he is sitting in front of the computer with his headphones on, talking to the other players as they all come up against some pixelated demon. He sleeps most of the day and is up playing all hours of the night, and so I asked my mother-in-law how he manages to stay alive and pay for things. She admitted that she subsidizes a lot of his lifestyle, allowing him to live in her basement, but that he also does make money by things he does in the games.
"What does he do?"
"Well, he makes things. He knows how to make clothes and weapons and stuff like that in there, and then he sells them to people."
Many of the games these days have an exchange program, where money in the game can be exchanged for real world money, just like any other currency. Apparently, my brother-in-law finds or makes items, sells them for game currency, and then either used that money to pay his gaming bills or cashes it out for real money.
As I've watched him, I've wondered, if he has this skill, why not get a video game design or video game programming related job? He could easily learn the source code, continue to design things, beta test games, and make a real living doing something that he already loves. It would be a lot cooler for my wife and I to say that he is a video game programmer than it is to say that he just plays games all day long.
Finding a video game designing or programming job is a bit more of a challenge, but there are services available to help someone with the requisite skills and/or interest find the right fit, either on a temporary or permanent basis, find the right company with the right kind of games to match. I'm waiting for the right time to talk to my brother-in-law about this, and I think, once he sizes up the idea and the opportunities, it might be something that he would be interested in doing.
