Viennese Art And Culture

Vienna has grown and is the largest city in Austria with just under 2 million people

. It is on the Danube River and close to Slovakia, on the east end of Austria. It was first a Celtic settlement founded around 500 BC. The Romans called the city Vindobona. They used this city as a fortress to guard the Roman Empire and keep a watchful eye on the Germanic tribes.

In the thirteenth century, The Mongolian Empire collapsed when Ogedei Khan died and his armies had to leave Europe. In the Middle Ages, Vienna was host to the Babenberg dynasty. In 1440, the Habsburg dynasty moved in. It became the capital of the Holy Roman Empire eventually and grew to be the cultural center for arts and sciences.

While the most notable musicians have contributed to the wealth of musical genius there, many famous composers were also born there. For example Joseph Haydn, Michael Hayden, Schubert and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century the composers came to the city of Austria because the Habsburgs made it the capital for classical music.

By the early 1500s it continued to rise as a center for culture. There began a renewed interest in musical instruments and especially the lute. Austria is also home to the famous jazz musician, Joseph Zawinul.


One of the top rock star from the 1980s sang his song Rock Me, Amadeus in honor of Mozart. Vienna is also home to the Vienna Art Orchestra which is one of the great European jazz ensembles. The Vienna Boys Choir is a not for profit, one of the most popular, boys choirs in the world. It consists of trebles and altos and is based in Austria. This goes all the way back to the Viennese court and Maximilian of Habsburg.

Vienna is in the Wachau region the north east part of Austria. You will enjoy the picturesque views of the Alps Mountains and the meandering Danube River. You will find many numerous museums to visit including the Sigmund Freud Museum and the House of Music Museum.
