Virginia Adds Big Rebate Program For Energy Efficient Home Improvements
Virginia Adds Big Rebate Program For Energy Efficient Home Improvements
Calling all homeowners in Virginia! The state has launched its VA Residential Energy Efficiency Rebate Program, providing $7 million for energy efficiency improvements and retrofits made by Virginia homeowners for replacement of major systems and equipment-including window and door replacements. Homeowners are eligible to receive 20% of the cost including installation, up to $2,000 per household. Plus you can get an additional refund of up to $250 for an energy audit.
But you must act now; to be eligible for Virginia's energy rebate, you must first register with the program. Funds are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is important to act fast and follow the required steps.
Take note that this residential rebate is on top of the $1500 tax credit offered by the federal government, which means that with 20% from the State of Virginia and 30% from the federal package, your cost savings can add up to $3,500. Your new energy-efficient windows and doors could cost you almost nothing.
Here's how it works: homeowners wishing to receive a rebate through the Virginia Energy Efficiency Rebate Program must apply online at Virginia's Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) website. This is how you register to reserve funding for your project. You will be asked to provide details about your project.
To understand what equipment, systems and services are eligible for energy efficiency rebates and to learn of program requirements associated with each item, it is a good idea to read both the terms and conditions and the energy efficiency measures requirements carefully before proceeding.
Once you have been notified that your application is approved, you will be authorized to proceed with the work. Once the energy-efficiency installation work is completed, you need to provide follow-up documentation, such as all invoices and receipts from the contractor. Yes-contractor labor is actually included in the rebate! But any work done by you, the applicant, is not.
Then the DMME office verifies the work and measures the energy efficiency that will be gained by the improvements you've made.
Bear in mind that the Virginia Residential Rebate Program is not the same as the federal tax credit program! Eligibility for a federal tax credit does not guarantee eligibility for a Virginia rebate and eligibility for a Virginia rebate does not guarantee eligibility for a federal tax credit. So you must apply for this rebate according to the instructions provided on the DDME site. An online tutorial is provided to assist you with the application.
Most importantly, you should apply soon, because everyone will want to take advantage of this exceptional, tax-free opportunity to save money and conserve energy before all the funds are disbursed.
Small businesses, industrial and commercial facilities are also eligible for rebates under the Commercial Energy Efficiency Program. Just remember that all eligible products and systems purchased under both the residential and commercial energy efficiency rebate program will have to meet minimum energy efficiency ratings.
