Visit Richmond Upon Thames
If you've got a weekend of relaxation and luxury in mind
, Richmond upon Thames is a great place to visit for a couple of days.
All around the location is peaceful and serene, with many towns in the surrounding areas all containing their own unique character.
For an overnight stay, we recommend the Carlton Mitre Hotel. It has excellent views, an outside sun terrace and a restaurant that serves an exquisite modern European menu. In this area, it's one of the most accessible hotels that is the best placed to allow easy travel to all the great local landmarks.
The Carlton is just across the road from Hampton Court Palace which is one of the most impressive buildings in the UK and a must see attraction for anyone who's looking to stay in the region.
Beyond the palace itself, the gardens include a massive maze, sparkling fountains, beautiful flower arrangements and open fields. This is the perfect place for a romantic picnic, so don't forget the Pimms.
If you're lucky you might even catch one of the many festivals and events which frequently occur here, so if you plan your trip carefully you could make it a really special day. In the past there have been many great acts performing here, including Simply Red and Tom Jones, but make sure you book your tickets in plenty of time to avoid disappointment.
Alternatively, you could catch some of the Hampton Court Flower Show that happens every July in the grounds. A world famous exhibition, this would make a perfect day out for anyone who is more botanically inclined.
The Palace is located just off the River Thames, so you can go for a boat trip which travels as far as Westminster Pier. You can man your own boat, or have someone else do the hard work for you, and many different sizes and types are available. Also, The Anglers Pub in Teddington is a unique bar to visit if you get thirsty along the way as it's floating on an island in the middle of the river.
By now you've probably worked up a bit of an appetite, having seen the grounds of the Palace and had a trip down the river, but you'll be happy to hear that you're spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat in this area.
Across from Hampton Court is a great eatery called The Albany. It's situated on the bank of the river Thames and provides an excellent spot for some great food and local ales.
It's equally brilliant sister restaurant Hart's Boatyard in Surbiton provides absolutely brilliant food and wine with equally great views and a buzzing atmosphere.
Of course you're not too far from London either, so if you're in the area for a weekend there's nothing to stop you from catching a train into the city. This location easily provides the best of both worlds, and is a perfect place to set up camp for a weekend exploring the capital. Why not see for yourself?
