The Molly Brown House became the Molly brown house in 1970. There was a group of citizens from the Denver area that wanted to preserve the home of Molly Brown because of the legacy she created for herself on the Titanic.
The Brown's home was built in 1889 and it was designed by William Lang. The home is a monument that sets the perfect stage for visitors to learn about the life of Molly Brown on and off of the Titanic.
Margaret Tobin Brown was born in 1867 and her parents were Irish immigrants in Hannibal Missouri. While her family lived in Missouri they were surrounded by families that came from a similar background.
Molly Brown talked highly of her parents and the emphasis that they put on education for their daughter. They understood that their daughter needed to have an education and needed to grow personally throughout her life.
After age 13, Molly left the educations system and was sent to work in a factory. While she was working in the factory she developed a dream for moving West and getting out of the town that she felt was oppressed by the factories.
Molly and her brother were finally able to attain the dream of moving West and they took off for Colorado. While she was in Colorado she quickly became involved with volunteering in soup kitchens and with other charity efforts.
Not long after she turned 19 only a short time after moving to Colorado she was introduced to J.J. Brown. J.J. was the supervisor of a mine and although he was middleclass he definitely did not have a fortune.
After courting for the summer 19 year old Molly and 31 year old J.J. were wed. After they were married J.J. found gold in a mine in Colorado and out of gratitude the company that he was working for gave him many shares in the company.
These shares made Molly and J.J. millionaires. After coming upon all of this money J.J. and Molly moved to Denver, to be closer to the city and to the happenings that occur in the everyday life of those that lived in the city.
During this same time the Silver Crash had devastated financial lives of many of the people around them. Molly Brown was attracted to the idea of reform that many people were repulsed by because of all of the newly poor individuals.
Throughout her entire life Molly Brown was looking out for those around her. She understood the responsibility that she had to those around her that were less fortunate than her and did not have a very large political voice.
When she was on the Titanic she was tossed onto a lifeboat and she helped the other women in the boat sail to safety. She understood how important it was to keep the women in good cheer and when they were rescued she helped care for the women.
Before their rescue boat even reached the dock in New York, Molly Brown had already raised ten thousand dollars for the victims of the Titanic crash. She talked with the first class passengers on the rescue boat to gather this money.
The museum in Denver teaches those that visit about this woman and what she stood for. You can visit the home that she lived in and get a taste of the life that she lead so many years ago.
