VoIP technology works by receiving voice signals and converting them into packets of data which it then sends through the internet. These packets of data are transported so that they reach their destination and are then converted back into voice. The transfer of packets is what your email system uses to move data from one location to another. Pretty basic, really.

The difference in technology between Analog and VoIP phones is that standard analog phones use Circuit Switching Network (CSN) while VoIP phones use Packet Switching Network (PSN).

VoIP phones can sometimes have call clarity challenges depending on the quality of the phone and the quality of your internet connection and the amount of traffic on the line. This may be no better or worse than you might experience on analog phones. And, VoIP phones have the added advantage of having cheaper call prices since the only cost is the broadband connection it requires to operate. VoIP phones also offer the same features as analog phones plus a few more: caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call Block, Three-Way-Calling, Voice Mail, * 69. VoIP also allows for the integration of data, video, and audio.

A major advantage of VoIP phones is that your service provider will let you keep your old phone number even if you change your location. With analog phones a change in location may require a change in phone number and area code. In fact, regardless of what location you are in, you can choose area number of another area so incoming calls from relatives and friends can be local calls for them. VoIP phones are cheap to use

Setting up a VoIP phone is relatively simple as long as you have a high speed internet connection; which is required. A VoIP Telephone Adapter with two Ethernet ports is used for connecting to a modem and a computer. Your phone number is programmed into the VoIP adapter so its voice signals can be converted into packets of data and sent over the internet.

Challenges with using VoIP phones arise if the modem fails or your power fails, as in a blackout. In both of these cases your VoIP phone will not work; an analog phone, however, would continue functioning as normal. VoIP phones also are de-activated during 911 or other emergency situations, and your VoIP phones can sometimes be kept in call waiting mode.

VoIP phones have many advantages but as a precaution you might need to have a backup analog system or convert to cell phone use should your VoIP system fail.
