Before we get into specific plants, it will be helpful to know a little about the chemicals that they absorb, and where you are most likely to encounter them indoors.

Benzene is contained in many detergents, household cleaning products, nail polish remover, gasoline, art supplies, adhesives, tobacco smoke, and inks.

Trichloroethylene is found in many solvents, paints, paint strippers, and glues. It can also off gas from clothes that have been dry cleaned.

Formaldehyde is used in all sorts of products including fire retardant for fabrics, carpet, pressed wood furniture, plywood, and some types of foam insulation.

Azalea---These beautiful plants come in a wide variety of colors. Bringing them into your home will not only add beauty, but will help filter formaldehyde. They need a spot that is sunny and cool. They will do the rest.

Bamboo Palm---This mostly green plant can survive in corners where there is not much light. And that's great because it's excellent at absorbing formaldehyde that may be off-gassing from furniture or carpet.
