Volkswagen Golf: Second Most Sold Car In The World
Volkswagen Golf: Second Most Sold Car In The World
This small family vehicle produced by iconic manufacturer Volkswagen is the second bestselling car in the world. Volkswagen sold more than 27 million units of Golf from 1974 till 2010, making it the only automaker in the world to have two top selling models in Top Three Cars Sold Ever list, previously VW Beetle was the most sold car with more than 21 million units sold. However Beetle was surpassed by Toyota Corolla, with 36 million units sold, and then by VW Golf, with more than 27 million units sold worldwide.
From 1974 till 2012 Volkswagen introduced seven generations of Golf, mostly in 3 door and 5 door hatchback styles but wagon, convertible and sedan versions of Golf were also released considering its market demand. Despite being the second most sold car in world, Golf could never claim the title of European Car Of The Year, somehow it always missed the limelight and came in second. However, the third generation Golf, MK3, broke this spell of bad luck by winning this title in 1992. Though Volkswagen mostly used Golf as the desired badge but from time to time VW also marketed it as Rabbit, mainly in North American market. The first generation Golf, MK1, was produced from 1974 till 1983, succeeded the legendry VW Beetle. VW offered it in 8 valve petrol and diesel engines, with engine capacities ranging from 1.1 to 1.6 litre.
Second generation, MK2, was sold from 1983 till 1992. VW introduced slight design changes and made this second generation more powerful than its predecessor. Petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1.3 litre to 2.0 litre were launched. Like the original MK1, MK2 also garnered massive applause for its lively driving experience. Third generation Golf, MK3, was produced from1991 till 1999. It finally brought in the Car of the Year title and established its legacy among Golfs of different generations. MK3 was praised for its economical and animated drive, VW claimed highway mileage of 420km on single tank forMK3.
Fourth generation Golf, MK4, was almost identical to MK3, it was produced from 1997 to 2002. VW introduced bigger turbo charged engines and AWD capabilities in this generation. Fifth and sixth generation Golf, MK5 and Mk6 respectively, came equipped with many improvements like 6 and 7 speed auto gearboxes with DSG systems, better suspension and better fuel economy. Volkswagen also launched BlueMotion, a fuel saving, economical variant of Golf capable of reaching 74 miles per gallon on highway.
