Voting For Green Energy In The Uk General Election

Apparently fair is worth fighting for, thats according to the Green Partys recent manifesto announcement, just in time for the May General Election

. So is it fair that battery farmed chicken and energy guzzling home appliances are often still the cheaper option for well-meaning consumers?

Politics often simplifies the often extremely complex subject of energy, whether that be energy production, energy saving, energy usage or energy alternatives. More than one party manifesto simply aims to promote on and offshore wind farms and the introduction of smart meters and energy efficient appliances in the home and from a top level perspective, this is all very admirable. But from a consumer perspective, can we realistically vote green as it were without breaking the bank?

The answer is yes, but we have to be smart about it and jumping straight in with both feet before undertaking research is where well all fall down. For sustainable and ethical food its all about smart shopping in a combination of local food stores and supermarkets but thats another story, here were talking household appliances, electrical goods that we cant or wont live without.

The introduction of energy ratings does give the consumer some idea of whats good or bad, with A+ being the best and anything below a D not really worth your valuable time or money. So think of buying electricals like you would hiring a school leaver or graduate an A grade is good and a D or E grade or below is starting to be slightly less impressive and may cost you precious resources in the future if you take them on.

Its not just about initial outlay, voting for green energy is about saving you money in the future. That Bosch washing machine that on first look is out of your budget range could save you hundreds of pounds on water and electricity bills from the moment you install it and recycle your old one. The bigger brands are of course leading the way in providing the most energy efficient products for the most competitive prices which is good for the consumer but bad for those trying to break through with environmentally friendly alternatives that cost the earth, so to speak.

That Sony or Panasonic Plasma TV that youve got your heart set on and that youve designated wall space to, doesnt have to create a hole in the ozone layer as well as in your pocket, in fact it doesnt have to create a hole in either. Buy smart and switch it off properly when youre not watching it, we should all know by now that leaving things on standby wastes scary amounts of energy and we all know that theres no longer ignorance to fall back on when were questioned about it.
