Waikato Museum – The Biggest Museum in New Zealand

Waikato Museum The Biggest Museum in New Zealand

Built in 1987 to the design of Ivan Mercep, the Waikato Museum in New Zealand is one of largest structures in the city. Waikato got its name because of its location near the banks of the River bearing the same name. This massive structure houses 12 galleries in five levels. More than a mere exhibition center, the Museum is all about bringing art, culture and society within tangible reach to the general public. Touted as the perfect place to hold exhibitions, events and functions of any sort, it has held ground breaking exhibitions such as "Assume Nothing Celebrating Gender Diversity" in recent times.

The exhibitions at Waikato are so extensive that most of them are on show only for a period of time. They even have an exhibition calendar that allows the visitor to see what would be on display during that specific time. But there are the long term exhibitions as well as the collections, art galleries and historic sites.

The collections are categorized into four areas; Visual Arts, Science, Tangata Whenua and Social History. There are around 2500 works that make up the Visual Arts Collection, some of which date back to the early European settlement era. The Tangata Whenua houses exhibits from flax weaving and wood carving to taiaha, ritual and archeological materials, plus many more that amount to over 30,000 pieces. The Social History exhibition with over 25,000 pieces emulates the history and development of Hamilton and the Science Collection is the newest addition to this extensive collection.

The long term exhibitions housed within the Waikato Museum are many, one of which is the Te Kohao o Te Ngira, a house designed as a dedication to Queen Dame Te Atairangikahu. Another exhibition is the Te Whare Waka O Te Winika that is housed in the Te Winka Gallery. This a 200 year old war canoe of Maori that was a gift to the Museum by the Maori Queen. The Mighty River Waikato', is in itself one of the exhibits of the museum. It's a depiction of the life source of the people of Hamilton.

The Hamilton Stories and Trust Waikato Art Gallery are two other exhibits that are on display throughout. Aimed at education as well as entertainment, the depictions in these galleries are engaging as well as innovative and thought-provoking.

A Hamilton hotel that is a favorite among families as well as business persons is the Kingsgate Hotel Hamilton. Situated only minutes away from the city center, this star rated accommodation has some of the best hotel specials Hamilton can offer.
