Why Choose SBRI? One of the easiest measures of a reputable outdoor centre is to check if they have an AALA licence. This licence is a legal requirement for and outdoor activity company that works with young people. Holding an AALA licence doesn't guarantee that the company is reputable, but it does prove that they will have been inspected and reached an acceptable standard on the day of the inspection. Our activity centre holds one that is valid for 2 years, the longest period awarded to an outdoor activity centre of our kind.
Insurance
All reputable outdoor activity centres will have a comprehensive third party insurance certificate. We would strongly advise getting a copy of this before you visit any activity centre, and avoiding any centre that isn't able to produce a valid one.
Very few centres will provide personal accident insurance, so if this is an issue we would recommend arranging this through an insurance broker.
Instructors
Reputable outdoor activity centres will only use experienced and qualified instructors. An outdoor activity centre that uses professional instructors who work in the outdoors for a career will give far higher quality activities, as well as being considerably safer. You should beware any outdoor activity centre that uses seasonal employees (i.e. instructors that are only looking for a summer job) as there is a greater risk of accidents occurring. Ensure that all instructors have a valid CRB check, and that they have an up to date First Aid certificate. At Sbri Cymru we only use instructors who love the outdoors as much as we do, and are very picky on the ones that we will employ.
Risk assessments
Any reputable outdoor activity centre will have no issues allowing you to view their risk assessments. If a centre refuses to let you see them you should question why.
At Sbri Cymru we are happy for you to come to our centre and view them at any time.
Site visits. Any reputable outdoor activity centre will be happy for you to carry out a site visit. Seeing the premises will often give you a good idea of how the centre operates.
Equipment
Take a look at the equipment that the outdoor activity centre is using. If it's old and tatty looking is it safe to use? Are you better off using a centre that has better looked after equipment?
Pricing
The adage of "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" applies in particular to outdoor activity centres. Whilst you may be under pressure to keep to a budget you should question the value of a childs life. A company that is able to provide the same activity as another for half the price is probably cutting corners somewhere.
