The College Level Examination Program, or CLEP

, allows students to take a test instead of taking certain courses. If the student passes the test, he or she will receive college credit for that course without having to take it. This can be a great advantage as it will allow the student to finish her degree sooner. In addition, students who take CLEP exams in lieu of classes can save a lot of money on tuition and books. This is worth considering in tough economic times. Of course, anytime you are paying for a college education, whether it is for yourself or for someone else, it pays to save wherever you can.

You can take a CLEP exams in one of 33 areas of study. You may have acquired knowledge through a job you had or through independent study. It really doesnt matter how you came to learn the knowledge you have acquired. What matters is that you can get college credit for it and either expedite your college education or catch up if you have fallen behind.

You can read descriptions of each CLEP test on the official website of the College Board, which is the association that administers the CLEP exams. This way, you will have an idea of which CLEP you may be interested in taking. While you may still need to brush up on your knowledge of the subject, you can do so in your spare time and as long as you pass the CLEP exam for which you have tested, you will have one more class out of the way.

You may need to check with the college you are attending to make sure that they will accept CLEP credit. Most colleges will and you can usually find information about CLEP on your colleges website. Ask your advisor if you have any questions or concerns about whether you can take a particular CLEP test.

CLEP may be especially helpful for nontraditional students who have spent decades learning various things. You may not even realize that you have the kind of knowledge that would qualify you to get college credit by skipping a class and taking the CLEP. That is why it is helpful to look over the list of exams that are offered by CLEP to see which ones you may be knowledgeable about. Even if you need to take a refresher course, it will still be far cheaper and faster than taking an entire semester course.

Individuals who go back to college while they are working or raising kids can benefit from taking the CLEP as it will reduce the amount of time they will need to spend on campus. It can be extremely difficult to fit your college schedule around your job and kids and if you can eliminate the need to take some of the courses yet still get credit for them, it will help cut down on the amount of time you must spend not only on campus, but on doing the homework and studying for exams.
