Want To Move To Canada But Being Put Off? It Better Not Be Because Of The Gun Laws

Arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world

, Canada is a destination that attracts people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Due to it having such a varied attractiveness, with everything from regular sports events taking place to acres of open land to explore, mix this with the bustling, cosmopolitan cities and the quaint towns and villages, it's no wonder that thousands move to the country each year.

Although the country may seem like such a perfect one, there is no doubt that for those living in worse-off countries - which includes the UK at the moment - there is a certain degree of wearing rose tinted glasses when looking at Canada, as anywhere seems better than the place currently called home.

It therefore wouldn't be appropriate to let you think gaining a Canada visa and moving is going to mean the end of your problems as the grass is always greener on the other side. Yes, Canada has a whole host of good points, but it isn't a perfect place.

However, it's important that you don't just research the negative aspects to the country without looking into them further and gun control is one of those topics that people hear about and begin to disregard a move to the country simply because gun ownership is allowed.

In a nutshell, owning a gun in Canada is legal, as long as you carry the full and proper license (for which there is a choice of three, depending upon the type of firearm you want to own). However, due to the fact that hunting is very much a popular Canadian and American pastime, the vast majority of the guns in the country are owned for hunting purposes and what's more no gun can be purchased on the grounds of owning it for self-defence.

Now although this might be reassuring to a certain degree, it becomes even more reassuring when viewing the statistics of gun ownership. Look at America and according to a 2003 publication by Philip J Cook and Ludwig Jens entitled Evaluating Gun Policy: Effects On Crime And Violence, approximately 25 percent of all Americans own a firearm of some sort - that's in excess of 90,000,00 people

Look at the Canadian statistic, however and according to the Canadian Firearms Program, in the first quarter of 2010 a mere 5.4 percent of the whole population owned a firearm. And whilst this may not be as low as the UK figure (it is estimated there are around 300,000 registered guns in the UK), considering owning a gun in Canada is a lot more normal and acceptable, it's a great figure and proof to a certain extent that gun control does work.

Yes, it is legal to own a gun in Canada and yes, it is true that children over the age of 12 can have their own license (they can't, however, own their own gun), but it's important to realise that the UK is in fact one of only a few countries were gun ownership is illegal in some circumstances (for instance, even with a license, you aren't allowed to own a handgun) and therefore if you're planning to gain a Canada visa - or a visa for most other countries, in fact - you shouldn't be put off by their gun laws.
